Definition of Lipid profile

Lipid panel is often called as Lipid profile which is a blood tests panel that acts as a medical screening tool for abnormalities in lipids or in simpler terms you can say that this is a panel used to measure lipids.
Components of lipid profile
1.                Cholesterol
2.                Triglycerides
3.                High-density lipoprotein (HDL)
4.                Low-density lipoprotein (LDL).

Cholesterol is an insoluble fat (in blood), hence it requires something to transport itself in the body HDL, LDL are such components or small molecules know as lipoproteins that help in carrying Cholesterol in the body.

Note: Lipid profile is many times also known as Triglycerides test or Cholesterol test

Why is this test required?
This test is performed to check and measure good & bad triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood.

Fastening for a lipid profile
Total lipid profile test may require person to fast for at-least 12 hours that means not food or drink except water.
Cholesterol is required by body to function properly. But having said that, too much cholesterol can lead to many problems such as:
  • stroke
  • heart disease
  • atherosclerosis


5 Must have food in order to control cholesterol levels and maintain heart health
  1. Olive oil
  2. Nuts (Walnuts & almonds)
  3. Oats
  4. Fish
  5. Garlic

Cholesterol testing is suggested and required to be done by:
  • Chain smokers
  • Fat and overweight people
  • People who have diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, kidney disease, or an underactive thyroid gland
  • Person who have family history of heart disease or high cholesterol
  • Alcoholic
